Bought 10 day plan for chengdu, doesn't connect. Helpdesk took ages to reply. Did network setting gymnastic and it still doesn't work. (who has time to do all these nonsense overseas) Bought a different sim card from different company. Finally...
the eSIM works as advertised, and it used to work on rooted and bootloader unlocked smartphones; however, that's no longer the case. Luckily, I have a spare phone that I can flash the factory image and use the eSIM.

It's hit and miss whether it works in your destination country. No luck in Mongolia and parts of Malaysia. Better have a backup sim ready.
